The history of higher education in the Zhezkazgan region began in 1961 with the opening of the Evening General Technical Faculty of Karaganda Polytechnic Institute (KarPI). The first student intake was for the major "Power Supply of Industrial Enterprises" — a response to the growing demands of the mining and metallurgical industry of Central Kazakhstan.
In 1967 the first graduation of engineers took place. As the cities of Zhezkazgan and Satpayev expanded, the evening faculty grew; in 1977 it was transformed into a KarPI branch offering both full-time and evening study modes. In 1992 the branch was reorganized into the independent Zhezkazgan Mining and Technological Institute, focused on the needs of the mining region.
